8.3 Changing preferences

APB search let's you set some implicit values of search script. Most of these settings can be overwritten by visitors of your site during searching. We recommend you to include these options in advanced search (see also chapter 4.1 Creating search form).

  • Number of results displayed on search results page

When searching for some common words, quite a lot of results may be displayed on search results page. It's useful to divide them into several pages. You may set the number of results displayed on one search results page here or you may let your visitors to select this number.

  • Weight of matches in title, description and keywords

Appearance of words in title, description and keywords of your page has higher relevance than appearance in body of the page. (see Chapter 1.4 - Creating index) In example shown in figure one appearance of search word in title equals to five appearances in body. One appearance in description equals to three appearances in body and one appearance in keywords equals to two appearances in body. You can edit these settings, but your visitors cannot.

    Let's consider two pages:
The first one has no appearance of search words in title, two appearances in description, one appearance in keywords and ten appearances in body of the page. Total score of the first page is 0*5+2*3+1*2+5*1=13.
The second one has one appearance of search words in title, one appearance in description, one appearance in keywords and four appearances in body of the page. Total score of the second page is 1*5+1*3+1*2+4*1=14. Since 14>13, the second page will be displayed higher in search results page.

  • Match whole words only

You may force the search script to look for entire words only. For example, when searching for word atom, the script finds also word anatomy. When "Match whole words only" option is selected, the search script looks only for word atom, thus gives no match for word anatomy. You may let your visitors to change your setting.

  • Case sensitive search

You may force the search script to be case sensitive. For example, when searching for word Michael, search script finds also word michael, since these two words are considered the same ones. If "Case sensitive search" option is selected, the script gives no result, since Michael and michael are considered two different words. You may let your visitors to change your setting.
